Hod (Giving Space) is … when we hold back from taking action with a moment of silence, a pause, a breath. The Kabbalistic term ‘Hod’ is the divine energy of giving space, holding back and bringing awareness of another. It sits metaphorically on the left thigh. On the right thigh sits the divine energy of ‘Netzach’ which is the energy we use to connect and reach out to another. All relationships require both energies – reaching out with Netzach and giving space with Hod. How is your energy being received by the other? Is there too much Netzach? Not enough Hod? Or too much Hod, requiring the energy of more Netzach? In balance, we get Yesod – a true foundational bonding of safety, trust, empathy and connection.
6th day of the Jewish month of Cheshvan – the month of Hod (Giving Space)
Hod (giving space) is … this quote from the trauma expert, Peter Levine: ‘When we first come out of our fight and flight responses, we come back to the here and now and make meaningful contact with the objects and organisms in our environment. Often, though, we’re so unused to a sense of stillness that we don’t know what to make of it.’ An affirmation that he suggests is simply to say “Home, home at last.” ‘Remember that this place of balance and presence is ultimately the place where each of us belongs.’
3rd day of the Jewish month of Cheshvan – the month of Hod (giving space)
Hod (giving space) is … surrendering to ‘what is.’ That point of letting go of expectations (‘false visions of the future’) and sitting in the present moment with whatever is presenting itself is an act of giving space. Feel the feelings, breathe and hear intuition. “This too shall pass” since each moment brings so many possibilities.
2nd day of the Jewish month of Cheshvan – the month of Hod (giving space)
Happy first day of the Jewish month of Cheshvan 🙂 I’m calling the theme of this month Hod which is a Kabbalistic term with many meanings. Hod has the quality of receptivity and giving space.
This month of Cheshvan is a quiet month compared to last month – the month of Tishrei which was jammed pack with holidays. It’s a month to integrate all the spirituality of the past holy days and a month to get back into regular schedules.
The question is how? How to take intense spirituality and bring it into the day to day. I believe one way to do this is by giving space—giving space to oneself, giving space to others, giving space in our day. Giving space in these ways make us available to the moment and make us more present, noticing how someone is receiving what we’re sharing, noticing how we’re receiving what is happening in our lives, noticing space.
So that’s the theme I’ll be exploring and as usual there are tons of lessons for me to learn regarding this topic. I hope it sparks your curiosity and please share throughout the month what giving space means for you:)
